What you missed on WandaVision
For the past seven or so weeks, I have been staying up to 2 a.m. every Friday just so I can be one of the first people to witness the newest episode of WanadaVision on Disney+. My best friend in Springfield, Missouri does the same thing and then immediately after we facetime each other as we speculate what’s going to happen next. Millions of people around the world I’m sure are doing the exact same thing. This show is the first thing Marvel has released from Phase 4 and the first Marvel anything since 2019.
Some fans on the internet are not fond of the one episode per week. In the new streaming age, we are so used to binge watching whole seasons when they come out. I believe that one episode a week was a smart move on Marvel’s behalf. If they released it all at once, there wouldn’t be tons of fan theories circulating the internet each week and all of the questions people have would either be spoiled or answered in a couple of hours. Also, the Wanda show is based on different sitcom stereotypes and sitcoms were /are aired only one episode at a time so it makes sense for them to do it this way.
Each episode is based off of a different decade starting with the ’50s. I think it’s great to see how the idea of the perfect wife or mom changes over time as the show progresses. In the very first episode Wanda’s whole plot is that she forgot to prepare for a dinner party with her husband’s boss and she has to just whip one up right away while looking perfect the whole time. But by episode seven, she’s in her pajamas telling her kids that she just needs time by herself and sometimes moms don’t have all the answers. It shows not only her character development and how she’s losing her mind, but also how society’s image of women has changed.
Earlier I mentioned fan theories. There are tons going around right now. Some are very detailed and thought out based on the comics, like how Agness was Agatha Harkness, which turned out to be true in episode seven. Others are a little more far fetched, like how the milk that Wanda was drinking changed from almond to 2% so that means something. It’s great to see people becoming new fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but it is very easy to tell who has seen all the movies before and who hasn’t.
Overall, I think it’s an amazing show with an amazing plot. It keeps me on the edge of my seat every week. I do wish the episodes were longer and I’m starting to hate the words “Please Stand By” but those are my only critiques so far. Every theme song has been perfect for the situation for the particular episode, especially the Agatha’s theme song. This show is what keeps me going through the week and I can’t wait to see what it does for the future of the MCU.
